2025 Goals

Introduction

As my tradition, I like to reflect briefly on last year's goals and come up with some new ones. Throughout the year, I like to take a look at my goals and see how I am tracking.

It also gives me a chance to reflect upon where I am at and where I want to be.  It also allows me to dream a bit and get re-inspired to run my best.

How I Did I Do With 2024 Goals

Race Less: Mostly Failed

I knew this one wasn't going to work from the start. I started off with the best intentions but I never really stuck with it.  I am okay with not succeeding here -- although I think it would've been better for me to work on recovery and actually being fresh and prepared for many of the races I did this year.

Do a New Race: Success

I did several this year and knocked off another state on my 50 states list (Indiana).  There weren't many new ones this year, but I did succeed.

Smith Lake in Wells Nevada

Goal Times: Failed

I did get some revenge on the the half marathon distance -- particularly the first two races of the year.  They weren't up to my 1:51 goal.  I also had ambitions of hitting 23:XX, but after March, that fell of the radar.  By midyear, I knew most of my time goals were gone and it was just a matter of getting where I was at the start of the year.

Clean Up My Diet: Mostly Failed

I eat better than most, but my weight has gone up a bit this year.  I think I do a lot of stress eating and I don't keep ample snacks around the house that I feel good about eating all the time. This goal definitely needs unrelenting focus.

Another goal I had, but was unlisted, was to train hard and do my "sessions".  I succeeded on this immensely.  I stuck with the workouts and felt like they helped a lot in keeping what speed I had.  I did neglect more of the endurance and speed endurance though and my half marathon times came crashing down.

Goals for 2025

Goal Times:

I feel like my fitness is coming back -- although slowly.  By continuing to work on my fitness, doing "sessions" and doing workouts for race distances I want to succeed at, I think I can hit the following times:

5K: 24:30
10K: 51:00
Half Marathon: 1:55

Continue To Work On My "Core" Drills

The last two years has seen me going to the Physical Therapist's office.  I've learned a lot of things that more or less has kept me healthy over the past few years.  At times throughout the year, I've gotten very diligent about it and then I'll go weeks without doing anything.

I think the exercises and drills I've been taught, have improved my form and increased my durability.  I need to do them more consistently -- at least twice a week.

Do A Destination Race

This always excites me: travel someplace new or do a race I haven't done before.  It always stokes my interest and fires me up.

My goals are really conservative.  I can always re-evaluate them as the year goes on.  I still don't know exactly where I am at given all that I have gone through in 2024.  I'll be sure to check in with myself and reevaluate what I can do to achieve this year's goals.

Note:

Usually by now, you'd see WAY more races listed for 2025.  However, we are talking about leaving the Salt Lake area.  Where? I think I have some clues but until something gets 100% committed to, I'll keep it on the downlow.  It looks like "it is going" to be happen this year, but still not 100% sure.  So I'll be going week to week on races until I know for sure.

2024 Running Year in Review

Total Miles:  1721.36

Introduction

So, I'll start off by saying 2024 was a total s**t show as far as running and racing went.  I had very high hopes and the season started really well. My first two races came out strong and I figured I was going to build off of 2023's successful year and turn it up a notch.

Boy, was I wrong.

After the first few races, I started to experience some nerve issues.  I had a lot of numbness in my hands and back.  It didn't really impact my running, but I suspect it did.  Also, in my opinion, it wasn't a running injury.  It was from stress and too much sitting.

I remember before the start of the Las Vegas half marathon I was really worried as to whether I was going to be able to run it at all.

As the season I wore on the nerve issues got pretty bad.  I wound up seeing a doctor and actually getting a check-up, which was one of my goals of the year. I hadn't really been to the doctors in over a decade and as someone well into their masters, I knew I was playing with fire.

Eventually the nerve issue did get better.  It took some time and I had to work on stress management. However, another issue came up.

By April, I noticed that my times were falling off a cliff.   I was having constantly tingling in my arms and legs and I wound up getting a ton of MRIs, and more doctor appointments.  For the most part, I was passing all my tests and the only thing they could find wrong with me was that I still had a pinched nerve in my back (spondylitis) that was likely causing the problems.

It also seemed at about this time that I lost all my 5K speed -- almost overnight.  I wanted to estimate that I lost about 90 seconds -- for no reason at all. I was still training hard, putting in the miles, doing my strength work.  But for some reason my times fell off a cliff.  You can see the steady decline by going to my AthLinks pages.

Then, my blood pressure became elevated.  I was hitting 150/90 or so, which I definitely felt.  Suddenly I was seeing a GP, getting blood work and having more CT scans.  My heart health has always been excellent -- or at least so I thought.  It was maddening and baffling.

I was put on high blood pressure medicine, which almost made me feel worse.  I had a hard time functioning and running -- well I felt like I was going to pass out.  Doing any sort of speed work was almost impossible.

I was ordered to shut down running around the July timeframe until I could get more tests done.

Eventually, I did complete all tests.  And just about every test came back clean.  The one gotcha is that I did have a hole in my heart - that I was likely born with. I was struck with a lot of fear with this knowledge:  you mean I've been doing athletically and aerobically challenging activities all my life with this handicap?

I did wind up talking to a surgeon who didn't think my "hole" was causing the problems I was experiencing and sent me on my way.

And then around September or so -- all the symptoms of my heart issue vanished.  My blood pressure was 100% normal.  I was able to quit all the medicines and for the most part, I was symptom free.  My times improved slightly, but they were way off from where I was at the start of year.

As I write this, it's been about 3 months since I've had any sort of high blood pressure issues.  I've had a few iffy hours where something didn't feel right, but nothing like what I went through this summer.

And to complicate matters, I really don't understand (and I don't think my doctors were willing to weigh in either) on what exactly happened.  What happened to my fitness? Why did my heart give me problems for the last 5 months?

Suffice to say, 2024 has been a rough year for running.  In April and July, I had very low miles and so my total is going to come up a bit short.

But keep these events in mind as I catalog 2024 and given everything I went through (both health and life challenges) I soldiered on and turned in a decent year.

Races Run:

  • 5K - 18
  • 10K - 6
  • Half Marathon - 5

Best Race Performances

So, the start of the year came in strong.  The first two races were half marathons and I was shocked.  At the Virgin River race in 2023, I didn't run particularly well and I wanted revenge.  I came into 2024 ready to do better and I did.

I thought it was a fluke, but even did better while running the Sun Half Marathon.

Both races led me to believe that 2024 might be a break out year. Things were coming together.

The Eggs Legs 10K -- although apparently a short course -- was still a fantastic time and probably the last really fast race I had for 2024.

Worst Race Performances

Please note: this is not an indictment against the race or the organizers.  Simply put: I did NOT run very well on the given day.  Some of these races I've run in the past and have run well at and I would highly recommend them.  Do not let my poor race day discourage you from entering the race or racing with the organizer.  Many of these races I do year after year.

I could add about half a dozen more to this list, but all of these races left me pretty discouraged.  The Fiesta one was right after I started to experience health issues and the other races, I just had nothing.  I came in hoping to run well but it just wasn't there.

I was happy to finish, though and 2 out of three I did place in my age group.

Favorite Races of the Year

So, this year, despite my trials and tribulations with race times, I did get to experience some great races.  Some new, and some I rediscovered how much I love them.

  • Path to Opioid Prevention 5K  Simply put I loved this race's course.  I had run on parts of the area before, but never this stretch of it.  An absolutely beautiful race and I made a mental note to run the half marathon next year.
  • Utah County Santa Run 5K -- If you had told me at the start of the year this race would make any of my lists, I would've said no way.  I absolutely loved the race, the vibe and the scenery.
  • The Sun Half Marathon  -- as I was running this one, I asked myself, I absolutely love this course -- why am I not doing this one every year.  In so many ways, this one made my race of the year.
  • The Cedar City Half Marathon  - as tough of a race as this is, I love it.  Super well organized, beautiful course, cool party scene at the end. This race also had one of the coolest shirts as well.
  • Cole Porter Classic 5K -- a new state and a new race.  Absolutely loved the course and racing at lower altitude again.

Training Notes

Despite many setbacks and orders from medical professionals, I got in a very solid year of training.  My overall volume was down -- not because of injury but because of whatever medical issue I had.

Generally speaking though, throughout the year I managed to race, get in one harder speed session and some easy, longer efforts.  I also found myself running 5 to 8 times a week for a total of 30 - 45 miles per week on average.

I did participate in too many races this year.  And now that I am in the offseason, I can concentrate of the race in future. I wasn't really focused on any particular distance -- just getting enough endurance to participate in half marathons.  And I think that ultimately cost me.  I could really tax myself the way I should in order to peek for a race. That being said, though, I am willing to sacrifice some of that in order to have my social outlet.

As I write this in December, and with no races on the calendar for the next 6 weeks (or so), I am seeing the benefits of being able to train harder and work on specific race distances.  I am targeting one of two half marathons in late January (The Virgin River Half or the Sun Half Marathon) and I am now focusing on building my mileage and speed endurance.  I think the change of training focus is paying dividends already.

Also, after 18 months, I am beginning to question whether the 80 / 20 approach works and if it offers too little stimulus.  I expected at some point to get faster but I found my race times and everything getting slow.  I am beginning to open up a little more and push a little harder when the time is right.

Another one of my favorite experiences this year was racing and running in the Midwest.  Originally, I was born and raised in Illinois and that is where I more or less started my running career.  I was in Kokomo Indiana for a wedding and that offered me an opportunity to do a few new routes.  I more or less jumped on a bike trail and explored to my heart's content.

Once my wedding duties were complete, I ventured to McHenry County and got to run many of the routes I used to run back in my prime.  I enjoyed running by my old work and the bike trails.  Just a ton of memories and it made me quite homesick.

Some runs are simply unforgettable.

Conclusion

All in all, I am grateful I was able to run and participate in races as much as I could.  I had more challenges this year than what I've listed here but I never lost my desire to run and race.

I think I missed out on about 5 races this year due to whatever setbacks I was dealing with.

In a future post, I'll be listing out my goals for 2025.  Given the way I am feeling as I write this, I think 2025 is set up to be a good year -- and best of all I am starting in a new age group category.

2023 Year in Running

In Mesquite Nevada - along my favorite stretch of bike trail

Total Miles: 1898

I am very happy with the total.  I would've liked to have hit 2000 but given how much I raced and the training I did, 1900 miles is a good consolation prize.

Products of the Year:

I found three products that made a huge difference in my running.  First off, though, I should state that I am not really a product hound. Meaning, I pretty much have run with the same type of equipment year after year.  I suspect seeing some of these items on YouTube convinced me to give them a shot.

The Zipper Flip Belt: I used to stash my keys under a tire during a race and I'd go running without a phone.  Now -- I don't have to worry about it.  This belt holds gels, keys, and even a phone.  Usually while running, I forget it is even there.  I don't always use it, but it's been a nice addon for races and long runs and it is super secure -- even hotel keys don't slip out of the back of it. Well worth the investment.

Brooks Glycerin: I went to the store seeking a more cushioned shoe over my steadfast Brooks Adrenalines and I was sold on these.  The shoes aren't pillow soft but they are a definitely a smoother ride over the Adrenaline shoe.  I found myself working less hard and ran faster for my easy runs with the shoes.  They also lasted MUCH longer than the Adrenalines... with my first pair hitting over 425 miles (and I suspect I could've gotten more out of them). These might make my new daily trainer over the Adrenalines.  The downside is that they are slightly more expensive (about $20)

Saucony Endorphin Pro 2s:  There are later editions to this shoe out, but I got these last year during a blowout sale and I bought them on a whim -- sight unseen.  Normally the shoe runs for $150 or more -- and I got a pair for $89.  After my initial run with them, I came home and immediately ordered another pair.  I could run significantly faster compared to even the speedy FastTwitches and they became my go-to race shoe.  I used them for nearly every race after the St George Half Marathon and I think I got a nice boost from them. It took a bit for my feet to get used to them, but the times I was turning in were awesome.  By the end of the year, I had snagged another 2 pairs of shoes and managed to make the initial pair work for over 400 miles.  Just an incredible product for the money.

How Things Went

I set out with some pretty ambitious goals for 2023.  Most of them I successfully completed:

Work on Speed: Very Successful.  Throughout the year I made it a point to at least once a week do some sort of speed session.  I collected several from YouTube and implemented them frequently.  This is the one thing I am most proud of:  I was dedicated to working during my daily runs.

Smash 24 for the 5K: Mildly Successful   I ran several sub 24 minute 5Ks throughout the year.  My stretch goal was to hit 23:30.  I had higher hopes for even faster times, which I didn't hit.

Keep doing Easy Miles: Very Successful.  Most of my runs were at the zone 2 heart rate.  I embraced the 80 / 20 (80% of my miles are easy, the rest are work).  I over raced though which interfered with this ratio.  The 80% helped me bulk up my mileage without causing undo stress.  I am happy to report that I also didn't suffer any significant injuries this year either.

Embrace Racing Longer Distances: Very Successful.  I don't recall ever setting out to do this specifically but this I did well -- running  8 half marathons.  I had some grand visions of potentially running a full marathon, but I never committed to it.  I did way too many of these races, but it felt good covering that distance.

Do Strength Training: Mildly Successful   For the most part I was successful at this.  More or less, it depended upon my energy levels and what was on TV.  But I was more consistent than not and I think it is one reason why I stayed injury free this year.

Do a Destination Race: Successful.  The one race I did that qualifies was the Cedar City Half Marathon.  It wasn't quite a "new" destination but it was a race I hadn't done before and it did require a hotel stay.  I thoroughly enjoyed it despite having a tough race.

Goals for 2024

Race Less:  This sounds very easy, but for me, it is a bit of a "do I really want this?".  The short answer is that it is probably for the best.  I can't think of many races that I did in 2023 where I felt 100% rested.  I think largely it was because I carried a fairly large training load and I went into every race thinking it might be my day to PR.  Some races have more meaning than others and I need to learn to hold back on races that don't offer a lot.  This will allow me to train a bit harder throughout the week and not get overly fatigued from racing too often.

Do a New Race: The question is which one?  I definitely will need to start to do some race shopping to successfully complete this one.  Also the asterisk next to this one is that I should try to do one that isn't local -- some place new.

Run 1750+ Miles: This one just takes consistency and staying injury free. This really is a "given" in my yearly goals and not much of a stretch goal

Goal Times:  This is the area which will require work / dedication and is my primary focus for this year.  My goal times for the year: 23:30 for the 5K, sub 49 for the 10K and 1:51 for the half marathon.  All presume flat, certified courses.  By building up a solid base and doing my weekly speed sessions, I think this is doable.

Clean up my Diet: This year saw the return of all the weight I had lost during the pandemic.  The culprit to some extent is the return of eating out at restaurants too much.  I also bought too much junk food for around the house.  The weight I've gained -- about 15 pounds -- has definitely slowed me down.  I need to get back to basics and watch my portion control.

2023 Race Summary

By far my favorite photo of the year

Introduction

I was busy this year!  I didn't really intend it to work out this way, but I simply couldn't turn down a chance to race it would seem.

I did have some opportunities to run on the cheap -- or even free.  It started with some of the Black Friday deals that came out in 2022. I snapped up any bargain race I could.  I also know a timer, who would occasionally give me an entry into a race (part of his contract).

Had higher hopes at the Riverton Half Marathon

Number of Races Run (35)

  • 5Ks: 17
  • 10Ks: 10
  • Half Marathons: 8

Most of the races were 5K / 10K distances, which was my primary focus for the year.  Late in the year and early, I wound up doing a few half marathons as well. I found the half marathon getting a bit harder.  A decade ago, I could mail one in and get it done without too much stress.  Now, they are a bit more work and take more out of me.

The over-racing did take a toll on me, particularly in the summer.  I'd race on Saturday and try to run long on Sunday.  Sometimes I could do it, sometimes I couldn't. Usually by Tuesday I could attempt a speed session and then the rest of the week would be prepping for the next weekend's race.  I'll be honest, the racing did interfere with some quality sessions and my weekly training.

I love to toe the line and get a t-shirt, medal and see friends.  It was fun at times and other times I asked myself why I was putting myself through this.  I never felt 100% recovered at most points in the year.  I remember standing at the starting line at some of the races and asking myself, "Why am I here?"  Mostly the answer came back as "This is what I do and this is what I train for".

Overall Performance

I am pretty happy with my times this year.  With consistent speed training, remaining injury free, and the Saucony Endorphin Pro 2's on my feet, I ran well.  I had higher hopes but overall my times are in line with what I was training at.

I've found that as I get older, my ability to perform great gets harder and harder.  I've raced for nearly 20 years now, so ultimately I'll probably never reach where I was at when I was in my 30s.  I do think I can get faster though, which was the goal for 2023.

I dedicated the year to speed work and smart training sessions.  The speed sessions in particular helped and built my confidence and pain tolerance.  I also boosted my mileage up to about 40 miles per week.  I think I could've gotten this even higher if I had dialed back the races a little more.  While it wasn't quite the breakout year I had envisioned, I do feel like I am a stronger runner than now compared to where I was at the start of the year.

Below, I have listed my best and worst race performances of the year.  These events are in no way reflective on the race organizer.  It is a day where I showed up ready to race and either something good came out or something didn't work out.  I have excluded the super fast downhill races, for the most part.  While just about any massive downhill race can be considered a great race due to the usually fast times, I don't think they are reflective to how I ran.

Overall, though, I am really happy with the way my race season turned out in 2023.  I raced a lot, felt like I ran well and improved.  There seemed to be more focus in my training and I really enjoyed the experience throughout the year.

Best Race Performances:

Run SLC 5K

The year started off with a bang on this race.  I set out a goal of running sub 24 and despite it being very cold, I ran really well.  This race is fast and I believe a measured course that is truly 3.10 miles.  While my time was pretty much the same as when I ran it in 2022, I felt like I was on target for hitting my goal of running a 23:30 5K.

Rock 'n Roll Las Vegas Half Marathon

I hadn't run particularly well for my inaugural half marathon in 2023 and I've only run "well" in Las Vegas one or two times, so I had my doubts that this race would make it to my list.  But for the second year in a row, it did. The race started off without a lot of excitement and I was able to settle into an easy relaxed pace.  As the race progressed, my pace got a bit faster.  It was aided with a tailwind and a new pair of carbon-plated shoes.  I was still running strong well into the race, despite now having a headwind and late in the race I decided to really push.  What did I have?  I managed to finish with a 1:54 -- not exactly a stellar time, but I felt like I had finished strong and persevered through what is normally "not a good race" for me.  Honorable mention goes to the Salt Lake City Half Marathon as well.

Utah Valley 10K

This is the one race I put on the list that was downhill.  The course was also short, according to my Garmin.  However, it wasn't an insanely downhill race and I felt that the way I ran it and pushed hard at the end, gave me a ton of confidence in that I was heading in right direction.  I was also coming off a great 10K at the Eggs Legs Race, so I knew my training was going in the right direction.  I still remember the young man who paced me in the last mile and made me not give up.  Hopefully I'll run into him again.

Worst Race Performances:

Virgin River Half Marathon

So the year started off not so hot.  I stepped into the Virgin River Half Marathon and it was a new course.  Armed with some decent training, and a lot of confidence, I expected this race to go well.  It did for about the first half of the race. After that -- the wheels slowly fell off.  My initial pace was fine, but it just wasn't there and I knew it.  Perhaps my endurance wasn't the greatest, but I remember the last 2 - 3 miles being dreadful.

Snow Canyon Half Marathon

This race was a tale of two races.  And I really wanted to PR here.  I felt rested, well-trained and I knew the course. The weather was cool with only a mild headwind.  This the day for a PR.

The first 15K were a blast ... running the downhills at near 10K race pace.  The final 6K?  There were times were I just wanted to sit on the side of the curb and cry.  I got it done and my overall time wasn't bad, but it could've been so much better.

Lindon Days 5K

This was a race I had no business racing.  I think a friend was going to be there, it was cheap and there was nothing else going on that Saturday.  The course was hilly, long, and I had raced a lot in the past few weeks.  I remember feeling just awful at the starting line and questioning myself why I was there.  From the get go, it wasn't there and it was a race that left me frustrated with myself.

2022 Year in Running

Total Miles: 1405

Race Distances:

5K: 22

10K: 6

Half Marathons: 1

Best Races of the Year:

Run SLC 5K

Las Vegas Half Marathon

March Madness 10K

Early in 2022 I was running extremely well.  I had put in a solid effort throughout the winter and I came out pretty strong.  My goal was to run consistently in the 23's for a 5K and I started to see that I was fully capable of hitting that time in my first legit race of the year.  In a very competitive race, I ran a 23:50.

One of the races I was most proud of was the Las Vegas Half Marathon. It was my only half marathon of the year (more on that later) but I've never run particularly well there.  My endurance training hadn't gone quite as well as I had hoped and I was apprehensive about the race.  I expected another 2+ hour sufferfest.

This year, though, I ran well and knocked out a 1:57.  I felt like I had paced it really well, dialed in my diet and did extremely well for myself.  It wasn't a PR effort by any means, but given the circumstances, I didn't cross the finish line disappointed.

Finally, I ran well at the March Madness 10K.  This was another legitimate course and I nearly broke 50 minutes.  This was another one of my goals in 2022 and I came within 34 seconds of it.  I think I lost some time on it as a result of allergies but overall a race that I remember running well at.

Worst Races of the Year:

West Fest 5K

Sound of Hope 5K

Looking back at my logs, I felt like I really only had 2 races where I felt I had run poorly.  The comments below do NOT reflect on the organizers.  They are 100% my performance-based thoughts.

The West Fest 5K was humbling.  The course was very long (according to my Garmin) but still, for a 5K, I ran it poorly.  I ran nearly 28 minutes for 3.3 miles.  Even accounting for the extra quarter mile it was just a dud of a race for me.  Granted, this was my first race in ages and it was also my first race after Covid and dealing with my stress fracture.

The Sound of Hope 5K was baffling to me.  I was racing a lot of 5Ks at the time and my times were progressively getting better.  It was a flat, accurate course but after halfway through I just died and it was a gut-buster to the finish.  I ran a 25:11, which was a major step backwards.  I suspect the headwind and a bit of heat caught up with me but I wasn't happy with my race performance.

Goals and Setbacks

So first the setbacks.

In early March 2022, I had a back issue.  At first it wasn't too bad but it was generally always there.  I kept running on it because I could mostly ignore it and I had a bunch of races I had committed to.

Of course, it got progressively worse, even after rest and self-treatment.

My mileage plummeted and some days I could run 10 miles relatively pain free and other days I lasted 10 yards.  Finally in late April or so I went in for an official diagnosis.

I wound up having a stress fracture in my lower back.  There isn't anything they can do for it other than wait for it to recover.  I took 2 weeks off of running but was told I could resume running and keep it easy until it recovered.  I also did a round of Prednisone which drove me absolutely nuts.

It was still bothering me in May so I finally saw a physical therapist.  The fine folks at Canyon Sports Therapy worked with me.  It took a while, but I finally got the symptoms under control and was given a regime of exercises and stretches.  I am still doing those exercises today, which is a first for someone who loathes strength work.

I do believe it has made a difference for me.  I feel like a much stronger, more stable runner.  I've also noticed that my shoes don't wear down as fast as they used to as well.

I still deal with the back issue from time to time -- even 7+ months later.

Finally, in late May, I also got Covid.  The actual cold / flu wasn't too awful (it definitely was NOT fun) but the recovery seemed to take forever.  I had no energy and got winded very easily.  I would argue that it took about 2 - 3 months before I felt like myself again.  I was able to get in some running but I definitely couldn't hit those top gears like I used.  By the time September rolled around, I felt like my old self.

All of these setbacks cost me several half marathons (I didn't attend more half marathons than I completed this year).

So I had a few goals for 2022:

Run 23:30 -- consistently for 5Ks.  I semi did this.  I came up a bit short but I think that had to do with my injuries and Covid.  My training was definitely there and I was inching closer to it by the fall season.  However, it just came too late and I never really had that "A" race that I could smash for a finish.

I am happy that I followed a process on this.  I did work hard and did weekly speed sessions and my times were getting consistently better despite the setbacks.

Increase the mileage by 10 - 20%: Yet another fail, but sort of close.  I miss most of April and May, running a minimal amount of miles.  Even the summer months, when I could run just about whatever I wanted to and feel 95% okay with it, didn't see me hit the mileage I wanted to.  It was consistently hovering around 25 - 33 miles a week.

It wasn't until Oct / November where I started to see a large increase of mileage and that was because I started to use heart rate training and keep my easy runs easy.  More on this in another section.

Eat Healthy Foods: This was another so-so goal. It wasn't spelled out what I wanted to accomplish here. Yes, I had plenty of candy, chips and sweets.  But I also ate more healthy stuff as well: snacking on nuts and fruit.  My weight did creep up a bit (as of this morning 184) but overall this was of mediocre success.

Growth This Year

This year also saw me obtain some new habits.

With the stress fracture back injury, it was drilled into me that I need to do some stretching and strength work.  I had been doing some leading up to the injury (and whether it was the root cause of my back stress fracture remains a mystery) but my physical therapist gave me plenty of take-home exercises to do.

This whole process started in the middle of May and as I type this at the end of 2022, I am still doing my exercises pretty much as directed.  My routine is pretty simple: a series of stretches and then a variety of strength exercises with a theraband.

The results have been good.  My shoes seem to be wearing down less (i.e. I get more miles out of them) and I feel like my core is more stable.

The other thing I am currently working on is incorporating heart rate training.

I came across a number of videos on YouTube telling me that Zone 2 was the way to go and it could greatly transform your running.

The wisdom I was hearing was that most people do their easy runs too hard.  It wasn't the first time I had heard that advice.  But I could certainly relate to some of the side effects of constantly running at zone 3 and how super easy running could fix it.

So I learned a bit more about it and most were coaches were telling people you should run in Zone 2 -- which for me is about 126 - 134 beats per minute.

When I first attempted to do this I found myself either drifting into zone 3 (which is a middle ground which doesn't offer you much value) or getting frustrated because I was going into the upper 130's and 140's.

I felt like I wasn't even running.

My easy pace was original 9:30 per mile.  For me to hit the zone 2, I had to run at 10:30's, sometimes 11's.  I complained to everyone who would listen: it was too hard and how could this benefit me?

I stuck with it and each time I did it, I felt like this couldn't work.  I'd be walking to hit the heart rates in zone 2.

But I finally found a calculator. This one worked for me, at heart rate zone calculator.  I had been using the plain old age graded tables which didn't take into any account of "me".  I started to play with the numbers and I found out that the traditional tables -- were too low.  I was an established runner who had a slightly higher than normal resting heart rate.  I definitely knew my max heart rate from plenty of 5Ks I had run.  Once I plugged the calculations into my watch, I found it was easier to hit zone 2.

The pace that corresponds to that zone is about 10:30 and sometimes 11.  Some days I can run low 10's and still be in zone 2.

The promise on Zone 2 training is that eventually I'll be able to run in Zone 2 with a much faster pace, but it takes time.  I am generally reading about 3 - 4 months.  I am starting to see some results but the final verdict won't be in until Spring.

Some things I have noticed:

  1. I feel fresher, more often.  I don't struggle with soreness and a feeling of being over trained.
  2. I am able to hit my harder workouts harder and complete them.  I no longer think about or cut them off early.
  3. My mileage has increased by about 30% without feeling beat up.
  4. In the late season my 5Ks were improving.  But whether this was a result of speed training, cooler temps, or a combination of factors remains to be seen.

I am enjoying it to some extent.  I do believe you cannot do 100% of your runs in Zone 2.  You do need to train fast and being able to tolerate the discomfort of a 5K.  But right now, I try to do about 80% of my weekly mileage "easy".  I also have to keep my ego out of it for Strava purposes.

By March or April, I should know if I want to continue this process and whether my easy pace improves.

Goals for 2023

So the goals for 2023 are somewhat similar to 2022's.

1) Continue to work on speed.  How:  Continue to perform at least once weekly speed sessions.

2) Smash 24 minutes for the 5K:  How:  See #1 but also continue to race 5Ks.

3) Continue to make my easy days easy.  How: Work in Zone 2 and be sure that 80% of my weekly mileage is "easy".

4) Get some longer races in.  How: I only did one half marathon in 2022.  Most of that was because I was injured and missed a lot of the spring training / races.  Keep fit healthy.

5) Continue to do strength training.  How: I've got a pretty good routine down that I do a few times each week. Continue on working my core, hips and stabilizer muscles.

6) Get in a destination race that I haven't done before.
