Danger Cave State Historical Monument - Wendover, UT

Introduction

One of the nice things about running is that I am able to explore things on foot better than I would've if I had to try and find a spot to dump my car, especially when it comes to desert exploring.

I was in Wendover on a Thursday night and I got there early enough to place the sports bets that I wanted to and dump my stuff in my room before saddling up and heading out for a desert run.  It was already sort of late and I had plenty of hiking to do in the next 48 hours so I didn't want to go out too long.

So I headed up Aria Blvd and proceeded out to the desert.  The question though was where to go.  I've done just about all the trails out there.  I decided ultimately to try and find Danger Cave

Danger Cave's location isn't too hard to find and you can probably get to it by car.  There seemed to be a dirt road that lead to it if you were willing to take Exit 4 off of the I-80.

Me, I was running it.  So I headed down this ATV trail and hung a left at the point of the mountain.  About another third of a mile I spotted it...

I headed down along this ATV Trail
There is a slight hill with a path you have to climb to get to the entrance.  The entrance is closed off.  As the name suggests, the rocky area around it is ready to fall and the cave when it was discovered was called Danger Cave after a boulder rolled off from the top of it.  You can see the historical boulder that rolled off the edge of to the right of the entrance:

The park service does do tours of the cave so check their website periodically.

The visit to the cave was sort of a check mark on my list.  I spent about 5 - 10 minutes snooping around before heading back to Wendover.  It was a rewarding run and kind of cool that I was able to check it out.

Here are some photos of the area:

Week's Summary

This week was sort of a blah week.  The weather was fairly good but I didn't seem to have a lot of energy to run.

My Sunday long run, however, went well and I was turning in some decent splits near the end of it.  I've been using Beet Performer for key workouts and races.  As far as beet juices go it isn't awful tasting, but it isn't something I'd sip on a cool day while reading the newspaper.  It seems to have a very mild (if any) performance boost to it.  There isn't any caffeine in it -- it is just filled with nitrates that open blood vessels, allowing you to process oxygen better -- at least that is the science behind it.  It seems to work -- whether it is a placebo effect or there really is something to it, I am not sure.  It does, however, make going to the bathroom afterwards "interesting".

I also used my juice before Wednesday's key workout.  Normally I like to do 2 miles at 5K pace, but opted instead for a slightly altered workout of a long run.  It was one of those nights that I felt like running long at a good clip versus a gut busting speed workout.  It paid off and it felt good to run at a quick pace without going all out.

My overall volume was also solid.  Good enough to maintain my endurance fitness as well as put me on the cusp of easily training for a marathon.

Cat Update

I almost always run at the same time, same place during the week.  I get off by 4 PM, I fool around at home fro a bit and then head out by 4:30.  By 4:45 I pass by a place where I've been feeding a cute little feral that I've been calling Fluffy.  I've known this cat probably for 2 years.

Times are lean for the ferals.  With the ground covered by snow, I think they are short on food.  The mice that they thrive on, probably don't come out so they are hungry.

"Fluffy" knows my schedule and for the past few weeks she has been a regular customer.  I leave food and within a few minutes she appears (after I've stepped away) and it attacks the food.  It is a brief feel good moment for both of us and it gets me out the door on days I don't necessarily feel like running.

Wendover Run

If you've ever driven from Salt Lake to Wendover you've probably seen the graffiti along the I-80 and wondered about it.  It turns out that graffiti was (often times) written by WW2 serviceman back in the 40s while they were developing the atomic bomb that ended the war (at least that's the story I am told).

I have run through that area many times and it is just an immensely beautiful area that not too many people know about.  It isn't hard to get to and a morning run is often a treat.

I was running there on Saturday and was going to go for a short run.  Normally I get sucked into it and my quick short run turns into a long run.  However, I fully intended to keep it short.

As I was running, I spotted a hill or peak that I had run by countless times but never actually climbed.  Since I was on a short run, I decided to see what was up there and what the views were like.  Also, I had spotted what looked to be a pronghorn antelope at the top.  It has been a while since I've seen the antelope.

The climb was sort of tough (but actually coming down was tougher) but it was safe and afforded some incredible views of the salt flats, Wendover and the surrounding canyon.  I also scared about 5 pronghorns who were highly suspicious of me (very few people venture out that way).

I got some good pictures -- I just wished I had brought a better camera with me.  I had my old phone and the picture quality isn't the greatest.

Here are the photos I took:

Week's Summary

This week was actually a very solid training week.  Whatever race I am ramping up for is looking to be a good one.  I got in plenty of miles, including some hill training on the trails outside of Wendover Utah (pictures below).

I also managed to get in a 2 mile time trial -- sans a watch.  I wasn't expecting to be able to run hard -- I just didn't feel like it --  but once I got warmed up I turned on the jets.  I wish I had my watch so I would know how fast I ran, but it certainly felt like 16 minutes-ish.

I did a little bit of experimenting with my long run on Saturday as well.  I have read that the walk-run method works well in that you'll be able to maintain your average pace longer as it gives your running muscles a break.  Right before Vegas I ran into a runner who really liked it and since then I've been meaning to try it.  My plan was to run about a mile and walk for 1 minute.

First off, I had to put my ego in check.  Even my long run training runs I run too fast.  Mostly because I post the times and there is a sense of pride.  Ultimately that makes me race my long runs, which is a recipe for pace mismanagement and burnout.  Doing the walk run method forced me to sort of put the time on the back burner.

Secondly, I really looked forward to the walk break.  It seemed sort of weird after 1 mile to take a break and walk, but it kept my mind occupied.  I'd glance down at my Garmin and at my specific and get a break.

Third, during my breaks I could fiddle with my phone or drink.  90% of the time I have a hard time staying hydrated on my long runs.  Having a 1 minute walk break allowed me to ingest more hydration.

Fourth, I found that my running paces were faster.  I think part of this was I was trying to make up time for the break as well as my legs having a bit of recovery.

So was it a success?  For the most part it was a success.  I felt like my average pace was more sustainable.  Looking at my splits, I was holding a pretty consistent pace for 18 miles.  Once I hit mile 19, I was pretty gassed.  I suspect I could've done another mile at that pace, but I think I was hitting the wall.

I definitely want to continue this experiment.

Face to Face with My Feral Cat

Regular readers will know that I feed the feral cats along the bike trail.  I have done so for the past 2 years or so.  Every day that I leave food it is gone the next day.  Sometimes other animals get it, including the birds, but I know most of the time the cats get it.

I've been feeding one cute cat for the past 2 years or so.  She (or he) is super skittish and doesn't like to come near me.  However, she knows my schedule and where I drop the food.

This past week she was waiting for me on a tree branch.  As soon as she saw me, I was greeted with a few meows before it dropped down and into a culvert.  I always drop food at the other end and so I deposited the daily dose of crunchy food.

I backed away from the culvert and no more than a minute later the cat came and started to eat the food.  Normally if she sees me, she'll take off but she seemed to trust me.  I didn't get too close to her, but this was the closest I've ever been.  I got some decent shots of her:

Desert Run

Finally, over the Christmas break I went to Wendover for 2 nights.  I didn't have any luck there but I did take in a nice desert run.  I went a bit further than I should've but it was such a nice late afternoon that I had to make it to the point where I could see Pilot Peak.

I've done the trail to that point before, but it never really gets old.  I got some great pictures too.  I am not a big trail runner but this one is very doable.

Week's Summary

Well this week was definitely a "down" week for me -- and much needed.  I took some time off early in the week by "only" running 3 miles on Sunday.  Monday and Tuesday I found myself on the Las Vegas Strip.  For those that have gone to Las Vegas, particularly the Strip, it isn't the best area for running.  There is too many intersections with crazy taxi drivers and it just isn't a good place to run for me. Sure I'll do the Vegas Marathon but running from the Mirage just isn't a "good" run.

I finally made it to Mesquite, NV on Tuesday and got a run in.  I love exploring towns and I quickly found a bike trail that seemed to snake its way around town.  I wound up following it for several miles and got a tour of the Virgin River as well as a little goat farm:

On Thursday -- after driving all the way up the eastern side of Nevada I found myself in West Wendover, NV.  I love running the canyons there.  I re-explored an ATV trail behind the cemetery.  I thought it was new but it turns out that I had already been there.  I did get some awesome pictures though and it was an easy and enjoyable run.  I actually spotted some people hiking the canyon, which is like the second time I've seen someone besides me in the canyons there.

Upcoming Races

I might race over Memorial Day weekend.  I haven't completely decided what, if anything, I plan on doing but there is a half marathon on Saturday I am looking at and a 5K (or 10K) on Monday.

06/24: Utah Midnight Half Marathon - Provo, UT (Confirmed)
07/07: Utah Midnight (Legacy) Half Marathon - Farmington, UT (Confirmed)
08/19: Dam Train Race - 12 KM Race - Midway, UT (Confirmed)
11/12: Las Vegas Marathon - Las Vegas, NV (Confirmed)
04/21: Salt Lake City Marathon - Salt Lake City, UT (Confirmed (2018))
